Human’s Nature Quilt
Made with organic materials suspended in laminating sheets, this quilt was inspired by the fragmentation of ecosystems learned in my Environmental Sciences class, shown in the separation of different plants into a grid of squares. The plants I collected include wildflowers and their seeds, seedpods of wild vines, and wilting flowers from a vase that was about to be thrown away. The quilt represents the embrace of mother nature, as humans have changed her to be. A quilt has a warm, comforting connotation, as does mother Earth, our home that shelters and provides for us, yet the hard plastic material is a contrast to these feelings, showing how much degradation and artificiality humans have brought to the environment with their selfishness. This quilt highlights fading beauty, the same way we might pluck a flower for its beauty, which leads to its death.
